What are second photographers and why do I need one?

Second photographers or "second shooters" are hired by the wedding photographer to help capture more images and more moments on your wedding day. They are typically not chosen by the couple but are someone that the main photographer knows well and works with often (hopefully!).

One of the biggest questions couples ask me is whether or not to add a second photographer. While one photographer can absolutely capture a beautiful wedding day, having a second photographer often allows your story to be told more fully, naturally, and with less pressure on the timeline.

Here’s why a second photographer might be the right choice for your day, and how I approach adding a second photographer to your day.

More moments, happening at the same time

On a wedding day, I’m constantly on high alert—watching, listening, and anticipating moments as they unfold, always looking for the shot. That said, some of the sweetest, most meaningful moments happen just outside my frame while I’m focused on you and your partner. Having a second photographer means those quiet hugs, happy tears, and candid guest moments are still being captured, even when my attention needs to be fully on the bride and groom. These images often become some of the most meaningful ones in your final gallery.

A smoother, more relaxed timeline

Having two photographers can make the wedding day timeline feel much more relaxed because we’re able to be in two places at once. This is especially helpful during getting ready and detail photos. While I’m photographing your invitation suite, jewelry, florals, and other details, my second photographer can focus on your partner’s details and getting-ready moments so nothing feels rushed.

A second photographer also helps behind the scenes by gathering family members, moving lighting, and keeping things flowing smoothly. That extra support often gives us more time for creative portraits and more thoughtful detail photographs instead of having to move quickly from one part of the day to the next.

It also means we can photograph both of you getting ready at the same time. While I’m capturing bridal portraits, my second photographer can be with your partner for portraits and candid getting-ready moments, giving you a more complete story of the morning without needing to build extra time into the timeline.

More dynamic ceremony coverage

Imagine your ceremony moment: you’re walking down the aisle, your dress and veil flowing behind you as you take it all in. I’m at the front, capturing you as you walk toward your partner—the emotion, the anticipation, the way you look at each other in that instant—and I’ll also catch their reaction as they see you coming toward them. Meanwhile, my second photographer is positioned at the back of the aisle, capturing the dramatic view of your dress and veil from behind and a clear, unobstructed perspective of your partner’s reaction at the altar, ensuring this once-in-a-lifetime moment is told from every angle.

Extra coverage during high-energy moments

During the reception, having two photographers really shines. One of us can stay close to you during speeches, first dances, and special moments, while the other captures the overall energy of the room. This ensures nothing is missed and the atmosphere of the celebration is fully documented. It's especially great to have two photographers during a packed dance floor so we can capture all the excitement!

Peace of mind on your wedding day

Beyond the creative benefits, having a second photographer adds an extra layer of reassurance. More eyes, more equipment, and more experience means your memories are being thoughtfully captured from start to finish so you can truly relax and enjoy your day.

Experienced second photographers you can trust

One thing that’s very important to me is who I bring onto a wedding day. Every second photographer I work with is a professional wedding photographer with their own established business and real wedding experience. These are not assistants or beginners learning on the job, you can feel confident knowing that anyone photographing your wedding alongside me knows how to anticipate moments, handle any lighting situation, and step in seamlessly when needed. This also means consistency in quality, professionalism, and care throughout your gallery.
