Nani & George's Brunch Wedding at The River Cafe
As a wedding photographer in New York, I love celebrations that feel completely true to the couple, and this intimate brunch wedding at The River Café in Brooklyn was exactly that.
With its lush gardens, iconic New York City setting, and elegant waterfront atmosphere, The River Café is already one of the most romantic places to get married in Brooklyn. Pair that with a daytime celebration, a beautiful summer morning, and a couple surrounded by the people closest to them, and the entire day felt relaxed and incredibly personal.
Nani began the morning getting ready nearby at The 1 Hotel before heading to The River Café, where the couple shared their first look in the garden. The greenery was at its peak, filled with layers of ivy, flowers, and soft summer light. It gave us such a beautiful backdrop for portraits without ever needing to leave the venue.
Their first look was sweet and understated, and afterward we spent some time wandering the grounds together. I love using this part of the day to create portraits that feel a little more editorial while still allowing the couple to move, talk, laugh, and settle into the day naturally.
The bride’s gown was especially beautiful against the garden. The floral appliqué and full skirt photographed so well among all of the greenery, and the soft pink flowers throughout the space added just enough color without taking away from the couple.
We also took a few portraits inside before the ceremony began, including some of my favorites from the day against the deep red seating. I always love when a wedding venue gives us completely different environments to work with. Within just a few hours, their gallery moved from bright summer gardens to more polished, editorial indoor portraits.
An Intimate Outdoor Ceremony
Their ceremony took place outside, surrounded by family and friends. One of my favorite things about smaller weddings is how close everything feels. You can see every expression, every reaction, and all of the little moments happening between the people who matter most.
Nani and George's vows were personal and sweet. You could really see how much these two mean to each other.
Brunch at The River Café
Instead of transitioning into a traditional evening reception, the couple celebrated over brunch inside The River Café.
The daytime setting gave the reception such a different feeling. It was elegant without being overly formal, and the restaurant’s interiors added so much character to the photographs. The red banquettes, warm wood, mirrors, and greenery created a perfect contrast to the softer garden portraits from earlier in the day.
Once brunch began, the rest of the celebration felt easy and joyful. Guests gathered around the tables, the couple made their entrance together, and the day unfolded without the pressure of a long formal reception schedule.
Why I Love Brunch Weddings in New York
Brunch weddings can be such a beautiful option for couples who want something intimate, stylish, and a little different from a traditional Saturday night wedding.
You still get all of the meaningful parts of a wedding day: getting ready, portraits, a ceremony, family photographs, and a reception. But the overall atmosphere can feel much more relaxed. And for photography, daytime weddings mean we get to take advantage of beautiful natural light throughout so much of the celebration.
At a venue like The River Café, it works especially well. The gardens feel secluded and romantic even though you are right in Brooklyn, and the restaurant gives the reception that classic New York feeling.
This wedding was a perfect example of why a celebration does not have to be huge or last late into the night to feel incredibly special.
For couples planning a wedding at The River Café in Brooklyn, especially an intimate ceremony or brunch wedding, I would love to photograph it in a way that feels elevated while still leaving plenty of room for the real moments in between.
